Survey shows that in area of small launch systems, attention is given to high velocity vehicles for use with scientific probes; high energy chemical rockets may become competitive with nuclear electric vehicles; in large vehicle area concepts required to achieve re-usable launch vehicle received increased attention; hydrogen fuel has become prominent propellant; progress of launch vehicle propulsion development is indicated by semilogarithmic chart showing that rate of thrust development has been rapid, particularly for oxygen-hydrogen engines; propellants and combustion; solid propellant rockets.
