Strip-beam cesium contact ion engine forms major class of electrostatic propulsion engines that develop thrust by means of acceleration of charged particles; advantages include higher current density, ease of fabrication, high overall thrust density, etc; design considerations involved, performance achieved on small circular strip engine, and preliminary results of more advanced forms; emphasis on circular strip or ring type of ion engine and engine developed for early flight test demonstration; future improved performance indicated.
