Maximizing "burnout" velocity of solid core nuclear rocket is considered; criterion of optimality is maximization of rocket final velocity under constraints of maximum and minimum allowable reactor power level corresponding to engine throttleable limits and fixed initial propellant loading allocated either as useful thrust-producing propellant or as core afterheat removal coolant yielding no useful thrust; numerical results for example problem that considers vertical, dragfree liftoff from stationary earth with uniform gravitational field.
