France's space agency Centre Nat d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) will display its 66-ft Diamant space rocket at Paris Air Show, June 6 1963; first stage is liquid-fueled and has OD of 4.59 ft; both upper stages use solid fuel; 39,600-lb Diamant rises vertically until velocity reaches 330 fps at which time its stabilization sensor initiates pitchover command; at 23 mi altitude and 19.8 mi downrange, burnout occurs as vehicle is pitched to 40° off horizontal and velocity is about 5600 fps; first stage is separated by means of explosive bolts at 88.5 sec; second-stage ignition is signaled simultaneously.
