Historically, utilization of structural plastics in aircraft dates back to 1930's, however, even prior to that time, related materials such as laminated wood and doped muslin had been used in aircraft construction; earliest reinforced plastics were phenol-formaldehyde resins with cord, fabric, or paper reinforcements; breakthrough in reinforced plastics for aircraft use came with development of unsaturated polyester resins in 1942; development in use of reinforced plastics for aircraft and spacecraft are traced.
