Critical phases of flight that define characteristics of recovery system are conditions and requirements between stage separation to re-entry, re-entry, and terminal descent and landing; vehicle considerations that must be investigated in establishing requirements of recovery system are presented; review of programs initiated at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, to substantiate recovery program for launch vehicles, viz, H-1 engine salt water immersion tests and booster retrieval exercises at sea.
