Types of satellites, unoriented, spin-stabilized, and fully stabilized satellites are considered and various possible orbital configurations examined; characteristics of random vs stationary systems, its advantages and disadvantages; table shows expected duration and distribution of outages for polar orbits at altitude of 6000 nautical mi and for link spanning North Atlantic; complexity on ground and simplicity in orbit in medium-altitude system vs simplicity on ground and complexity in space in stationary system is shown; cost and revenue considerations.
