Concept and principle of gravity gradient stabilization and efforts made toward its achievement, have been delayed by difficulty of providing adequate damping; development of deHavilland self-deploying boom which requires no motor, but is powered by spring force stored in boom material itself; system was incorporated and tested in advanced satellite built by APL for Navy, launched June 16 1963 into polar orbit at 400-nautical mi altitude; results obtained.
