Deck machinery accounts for about 4% of total cost of modern cargo ship; operational economics of cargo ships is related to rapidity of turn around at ports of call and this, in turn, is influenced by nature and quality of cargo handling arrangements provided aboard; current trends in design and construction of deck machinery, defined as including anchor windlasses, capstans, cargo and lifeboat winches and cranes, are surveyed; discussion covers both mechanical and electrical aspects of equipment; possible approach to problem of indigenous manufacture of deck machinery is indicated.
