Term "automated ship" is limited to propulsion machinery and auxiliaries, and does not include automatic navigation equipment, automated cargo handling, or maneuvering devices; Maritime Administration initiated 4 parallel development contracts for 20,000-shp main propulsion units comprising 2 steam plant and 2 gas turbine plant concepts; feasibility studies and workings of power plants presented -- Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock; Allis-Chalmers Mfg Co; Pratt and Whitney Aircraft; and General Electric Co; all contracts are in feasibility study portion of work.
