Major part of cracks occurring in ship structures are results more of stress concentrations than of nominal weakness of hull; many cracks occurring at hatch corners in ships indicate that there is need for better design, and possibly also for better workmanship in many cases; model studies at Roy Inst Technology in Stockholm are reported, and consider stress distribution, effect of varying distance between adjacent hatches, thinner plating between hatches, influence of corner radius, streamline and circular corners, reinforcement.
