Need for understanding of ice mechanics, effects of hull form on ice breaking process, and conditions which must be met to achieve most effective ice breaking ability for given vessel displacement and installed power is stressed; variables of ship service requirements and environmental conditions are indicated; method of prediction for twin stern screw polar ice breakers based partially on theory and partially on existing icebreaker practice is shown.
