Vibration conditions which might result from fitting 5-bladed propeller to new ship; although no abnormal propeller excited vibration has been reported on existing vessels of similar type having 4-bladed propellers, consideration was given to increasing number of blades for reasons arising from installation of machinery of different design; tests were made on 470-ft bp dry cargo ship powered by 6-cyl diesel engine giving service speed of 15 knots, with 4-bladed propeller fitted; probable vibration conditions with 5-bladed propeller are shown.
