Project at Burntisland Shipbldg Co, on Firth of Forth, which enables construction of larger ships; as alternative to development of Tidal Harbour, lease was acquired on dock covering area of almost 6 acres and built about 90 yr ago; reconstruction of this dock is described; feature is that dock entrance is designed to serve dual purpose of impounding water to maintain sufficient depth for present purposes at all states of tide, with gate mounted on inside, and for withstanding full reverse tidal head with gate on outside so that part of West Dock could be converted to drydock for building ships if desired.
