By adapting principle of steel tape measure, family of extendible space structures was developed by De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd; concept of storable tubular extendible member (STEM) was successfully exploited in development of antennas and booms for high altitude rockets, satellites and manned space vehicles; types of STEM devices are divided into those which require extension and retraction, and those requiring extension only; design philosophy; examples of motorized STEM devices; current applications; suitability to mechanical hands, and other space structures.
