Behavior of vehicle using elastic wheel system is investigated using model; advantages in performance are shown for weak soil and rough textured surface model; in weak soil, elastic wheel behaves as effectively as rigid wheel 3 times its size, and maintains near-constant footprint-pressure over 3.1 increase in load; desirable performance in rough textured terrain is related to very low unsprung weight; this has effect of lessening gross chassis motions, maintaining wheel contact with surface, and to lower applied dynamic loads to wheel and chassis.
