Survey of state of art shows that much of argument about entry vehicles centers on choice of hypersonic maneuverability, or lift-drag (L/D) ratio; parameter is tied closely to both entry performance and to basic physical characteristics of entry vehicles; characteristics of entry vehicles and typical landable configurations; reference made to large-scale free-flight re-entry experiment, Project Fire, designed to obtain critical heating measurements at 37,000 fps; vehicle is 26 in. in diam and weighs 185 lb; tabulation of entry velocities for Mars and Venus Missions.
