Fundamental principle of operation of roundabout type of road junction is that of continuous diverging and merging of vehicles traveling at approximately equal speeds and at acute angles to each other, by one-way motion around central island; controlled traffic experiments conducted by Road Research Laboratory in Great Britain are reported and equations applying to capacity of weaving sections in roundabout are given; nomogram to simplify problem of computing practical capacity of roundabouts is illustrated; effect of modification of dimensions and efficiency in terms of land use examined.
