Development of functional submersibles provided new pathways to factual information of suboceanic phenomena; experience proved that adequate investigation can be accomplished only by manned vehicles, utilizing trained operators in situ and observational capability of human eye; advantages of instrumented, manned submersible have not been actively pursued because of unresolved technical problems involving building of vehicle; future needs are outlined.
