Use of strain hardening materials in submarine pressure hulls has focused attention on inelastic or plastic stability of cylindrical shells under external hydrostatic pressure; recently formulated set of governing equations for plastic stability of orthotropically stiffened cylinders is used to obtain explicit solutions for stiffened and unstiffened cylinders under hydrostatic pressure; plasticity reduction factors are derived for very short and moderate length unstiffened, orthotropically and ring stiffened cylinders.
