In methane tankers cargo is carried in liquid form at minus 258 F and boils off at rate of 0.3 to 0.5%/day; this amount of gas, corresponding to some 45 tpd for cargo of 10,000 tons, provides almost sufficient fuel to propel ship; recent amendments to Rules and Regulations for Construction of Ships concern provisional requirements for use of boiled-off gas as fuel for main machinery of steam and diesel engined tankers, and information on them is given.
