Although broad economics has compelled retention of steam traction as principal form of motive power, conditions necessary to establish more rapid and extensive change to electric and diesel traction are favorable in Great Britain; experience with six steam locomotives of unconventional design; extent to which new steam locomotives should be built concurrently with progressive change in kind of traction.
