New 2.58-mi line built by Texas and New Orleans cuts almost mile off distance of old snake-like route constructed in 1882 through Castle canyon, eliminates 229° of central angle by fewer and lighter curves, has one short bridge in place of five on old line, and saves seven minutes in running time of trains.
