Pontoons are landing stages which are slung over ships' side and suspended two feet above water level; access is by means of ships' accommodation ladders; designed and constructed by Whittingham and Mitchell, England, for speeding up of disembarkation and reembarkation of passengers on cruising ships at points of call where no harbor facilities exist, and where operation has to be effected by ships' launches.
