Developed by Maierform SA, bulb consists of two similar bowl shaped shells attached to each side of rudder; bowl may be fitted completely watertight, partially watertight or filled with water, to give most favorable load; purpose is greater propulsive efficiency and maneuverability; speed of ships so fitted is reported increased by as much as 0.8 knots; results of trials of 2500-ton Baltic Exporter with and without device.
