Gaviota Gorge Tunnel on U S Route 101 in Santa Barbara County, Calif, is part of project to provide limited access freeway northward from Gaviota for 8.3 mi; faulted, shattered rock was bored through to avoid deep cut and long dispersal haul; tunnel bore is semicircular above spring line, with 17 ft 7 1/2 in. radius; concrete linings 36 in. in timber supported sections and 24 in. in steel supported section.
