Etch primers used in aircraft industry consist of polyvinyl butyral resin, zinc tetroxychromate, oxidizable solvent, and phosphoric acid; epoxy primers have good adhesion to pickled or filmed surfaces but are not suitable for application to untreated aluminum; acrylic, polyurethane, and epoxy materials are used as finishing coats; paints chiefly based on polymethyl methacrylate are used because of good resistance to aircraft operating fluids.
