It is shown how excessive thermal expansion when braking from high speeds can loosen treads if they are incorrectly proportioned; railroad braking problems relating to automotive plate clutches and motor car drum brakes are considered together with brake thermal and resultant mechanical problems; effect of speed, wheel diameter, tire and brake block thickness when braking with cast-iron brake or with composition brake blocks at 20 ton axle load.
