Aerodynamic phenomena of high-speed running up to 165 km/hr were experimentally studied at Railway Technical Research Institute of Japanese National Railways on narrow gage (1067 mm) line; model experiments using wind tunnel or other devices were also carried out; test section of 30 km long and two prototype-trains consisting of two and four cars respectively were constructed; test section and prototype were then modified after analyzing test data, and were put into regular service; procedure and results of studies on various speed problems are described.
