Managers control railroad by words and numbers in form of oral and written instructions; simulation technique accepts same instructions from manager and returns output reports describing how simulation responded to input just as actual railroad would have responded to it; timetable, manipulation sheets and track layouts serve as inputs; outputs are in form of train sheets similar to records kept at railroad; this simulation model has been tested against actual operation of Long Island Rail Road; railroad personnel concluded that computer very closely duplicated their operation.
