Investigation of rails, of seven different steels, hard faced by manual electric arc welding with Type-450 Philips electrode and by CO2-shielded Arcosarc process; hardness, tensile properties, fatigue resistance, notch impact resistance, and microstructure were determined on all hard faced rails; it was found that effect of welding technique, especially thorough preheating of rails, outweighs effect of steel quality, on mechanical properties of rails.
