Users indicate lack of agreement about color usage (what color is to be used for what purpose) impedes use of colored pavement; colors are not effective at night, fade quickly or get smudged by tire marks and oil drippings; synthetic materials are hard to lay and expensive (up to 100 dollars/ton); motorists sometimes are confused by pavement; Ohio study provides evidence that use of color in pavements may well be effective traffic control device; it appears that this effectiveness will be more pronounced when used to indicate areas of no trespassing rather than to indicate paths or corridors to be followed.
