Effect of aluminum powder in damping HF instability was investigated in vortex burner; combustor was composed of main chamber having shallow center-perforated grain and hot gas generator which fed combustion gases tangentially into main chamber causing transverse mode combustion instability; aluminum powder was added either to main propellant or to gas generator charge; experimental results obtained showed that aluminum added in gas phase was as effective in damping out transverse mode instability as aluminum added as original ingredient of propellant.
