Short-duration experimental technique for investigating radiative properties of rocket exhaust plumes at high altitudes is described; measurements of spectral radiance of two interacting plumes generated by 1/45 scale F-1 engines burning gaseous ethylene and oxygen are presented; radiance characteristics of several Saturn auxiliary solid propellant rocket motors were also measured and results are included; measurements were obtained with rapid scanning IR spectrometer.
