Analysis of effect on rotation of satellite of torque caused by differences in velocities with respect to atmosphere of different portions of rotating satellite body; torque causes secular variations in magnitude of satellite angular momentum, precession rate, spin rate, and coning angle; approximate expressions are developed for these quantities as functions of time for satellite having shape of slim circular cylinder, and criterion is given for evolution of rotational motion into pure tumble or pure spin; applicability of method to satellites of other shapes having two of principal moments of inertia equal.
