German concern has furnished ten 500-hp. electric locomotives for Southwest African diamond mine; sandstorms compelled designer to choose internal worm-wheel transmission from motor to driving axles; four d.c. motors of 186 hp. output are closely mounted between wheels of twin-truck chassis; in middle of locomotive is mounted 200-hp. six-cylinder, 500-r.p.m. gasoline engine, directly connected to 120-kw., 500-volt d.c. generator; gas engine starts with compressed air, stored in reservoir from a direct-connected air compressor.
