Investigation of causes of machine-tool failures in plants of Studebaker Corp. of America at South Bend showed them to be due to three major causes which, in order of their importance, are (1) lack of lubrication, (2) overloading machines and carelessness, and (3) poor design and construction of machine-tools; author recommends specific measures that would greatly reduce number of failures.
