Deals generally with steering of ships; recent improvements in rudder design; considers various directions in which progress has been made in more satisfactory maneuvering of ships and in their rudder design; reference is first made to Sperry and Anschutz gyro-compasses; and due to reduced yawing of ship fitted with these instruments, savings in propulsive power of 3 to 4 per cent have been realized; actual tests on completed vessels have confirmed model tests that only half the torque on rudder head is required. See brief translated abstract in Mar. Engr. and Motorship Bldr., vol. 50, no. 594, Feb. 1927, p. 78.
