Problem of airfoil development for transonic flight has been de-emphasized in deference to wing sweepback and supersonic research; potentiality in airfoil design not yet exploited is use of negative camber and/or combined negative and positive camber; paper discusses physical basis for design idea, its several advantages and, where possible, verifies it with available unclassified test data.
