In this system tanker trails hose, 40 to 75 ft long for fighters and 75 to 125 ft for bombers and airliners, to end of which is attached conical metal drogue 32 in. in diam with open end facing rearward; drogue retains hose in straight line, holds hose in constant position relative to tanker and provides steady aiming point; it also provides lead-in entry for contacting mechanism on aircraft.
