Review of patents and trials of William Chapman (1749-1832) in locomotive construction, commenced in 1812; development and trials of chain haulage engine; special contributions were invention of "Bogie", now in worldwide use; load equalizing arrangements, now rendered redundant by use of springs; and application to locomotive of two cylinders to drive single shaft with quartered cranks, now universal.
