Following 1 1/2 yr of successful experimental operation with 4500 hp gas turbine locomotive, during which it operated nearly 80,000 mi in regular freight service and handled 285,000,000 gross ton miles, Union Pacific Railroad has placed order with General Electric Co for 10 similar locomotives, which are to be built at Erie, Pa; length 83 ft 7 1/2 in.; height 14 ft 3 in.; running gear consists of four 2-axle trucks; weight 253 tons.
