Effect of atmospheric nonuniformity on decay of shock waves generated by supersonic aircraft in steady level flight was investigated; analysis is made for axisymmetric body in adiabatic atmosphere, together with two-dimensional body case; decay rule of bow shock due to atmospheric nonuniformity is obtained by application of Whitham's theory on behavior of shock waves at large distances from body in uniform medium to case of stratified atmosphere; numerical calculations are carried out at flight Mach numbers from 1.3 to 3.0 and flight altitudes up to 10 km; extension of technique and numerical results.
