Method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to analyze effect of small gaps on loading distribution of planar lifting surfaces; it is found that flow near gap is governed by superposition of inner solutions, strengths of which are obtained by matching with outer or global solution; matching is accomplished in closed form for case of longitudinal gaps in low-aspect-ratio wings and lateral gaps in thin airfoils.
