Role of IATA (International Air Transport Assn) and its functions are reviewed; growth of airline traffic and annual increase in World passenger traffic (3 yr moving average) are shown in graphical form; lower costs have been progressively reflected in lower fares and rates; principal factors which led to successive generations of aircraft producing lower unit operating costs are examined; future developments with regard to introduction of SST and hypersonic transport, are considered from viewpoint of development costs and peak investment costs for several aircraft programs in terms of factor on unit aircraft price.
