As flight envelope has expanded, increasing number of possible applications of variable geometry devices has developed; aerodynamic factors have been shown to present some difficulty in using variable sweep wings in strictly subsonic areas of slow flight, maneuvering and best cruise; they, and other variable geometry devices, offer considerable promise in maintaining good subsonic characteristics while minimizing supersonic drag (either at low lift or near maximum L/D) or effecting desired stability margins.
