Variable geometry aircraft greatly reduces design compromises normally made with fixed wing aircraft and allows significant increases in performance that otherwise might not be obtainable; major changes in flight characteristics due to variable wing sweep are longitudinal and these handling qualities can be improved with stability augmentation; aircraft ride qualities are greatly improved with aft wing sweep; trim change associated with wing sweep is not large and is compensated for by flight control system; augmented flight control system is desirable with variable geometry aircraft.
