Five maintenance problems are outlined showing high costs of today's airline maintenance; much of large cost of maintenance is spent on scheduled checks which do not prevent failures and unscheduled troubleshooting which does not isolate faults; this is illustrated by two examples taken from air fleet of American Airlines, Inc; co-operation between designer, manufacturer, and operator is urged and fundamental steps to be taken are outlined; courses of action for FAA with respect to future airplane engineering, manufacturing, and operating regulations, including maintenance, are also indicated.
