Economy and efficiency of VTOL airplanes depends on their control power requirements for hover and low speed flight regime; amount of control power required for given VTOL configuration is intimately related to control system used; results of analytical and experimental studies which were performed to define aerodynamic characteristics of jet-lift VTOL airplane, and handling qualities requirements for transition and low speed flight of aircraft, and to compare various control modes (rate command, attitude command, attitude hold, nonlinear attitude and nonlinear attitude hold systems) in terms of pilot acceptance and overall control power requirements.
