Developed by Saab (Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget) as single-seat, multipurpose combat aircraft for attack role, 37 Viggen is delta-winged biplane achieving remarkable speed range and excellent STOL performance; design philosophy applied used development experience of delta-wing configuration which Saab had accumulated on Draken; airframe structure and special features; Pratt and Whitney JT8D-1 civil turbofan engine served as basis for Viggen engine, and Svenska Flygmotor developed this into afterburner-equipped RM8; details of fuel and control system, electronics and escape system; two-page cutaway drawing is also included.
